Fever Again
» baby footprints
The fever hit the baby again and it was quite bad this time. She was behaving unusually quiet while we took a taxi from Genting to Mines Resort. She would usually want to stand or move around in the car, but on that Monday, she was very “obedient” and even fell asleep on the father’s lap.
After checking into the hotel, I tried to feed her lunch, but she didn’t take much. She looked drowsy and was feeling feverish and fell asleep very soon. I wasn’t very worried because another tooth was pushing out of her lower gum; she probably was only running a low grade fever due to teething. But as I was about to take my shower, James was calling out to me, telling me the kid’s body felt like a boiling kettle. Indeed, she was hot. We sent her down to the hotel’s clinic immediately. Her temperature was already 39.7C. The doctor advised us to send her to a paediatrician because the fever was rather high and she didn’t have any prescription for infants.
Luckily the nearest paediatrician was on about 10 mins away by taxi. I was feeling really worried and guilty then. I blamed myself for not dressing her warm enough in Genting, she probably caught a cold. I blamed myself for not picking up her distress earlier. Her feet and hands were icy cold and she was moaning in her sleep, I should have detected these signs. Well, the doctor immediately gave her a suppository to lower her temperature because it was already 40.3C. She was crying so pathetically when we stripped her, poor baby. Later on, the doctor checked her mouth and throat, they were very red and swollen, she must have caught some bug somewhere. The father was the culprit again; he was having flu and probably passed it to her.
The paed seemed a bit reluctant to prescribed antibiotic, but said the baby needed it because her fever was too high. As far as I would like to keep her away from antibiotic, the high temperature told me to listen to the doctor. I would gave her anything to bring down her temperature. The baby was also prescribed some more suppositories, just in case she ran into high fever again in the middle of the night. I kept sponging her head after returning to the hotel. The medicines must be quite potent, her fever lowered and she recovered the next day. Thank goodness I didn’t have to insert another suppository; inserting one into the baby’s rectum seems to be a very daunting task.
One thing reasurring about that pead is that the clinic operates long hours, from 8.30am to 10pm, with no closing/resting hours in between. No wonder the doctor told us to bring the baby back anytime if neccessary, maybe he just lives around the corner. Next time, I must be better prepared on holiday trips outside Singapore. Must be well equipped with thermometer, medicines, byebye fever sheet. And also, must qurantine the father whenever he is sick.
