In the end, she just left the disassembled bits lying around and it was a hazard for Ryan who was 5 months then and still learning how to sit properly without falling sideways. In the end I scotch-taped up the entire mat so that the letters won't fall off and you could lift the mat off. Proved to be very useful. We have a thin mattress too, but it's challenging to keep an active toddler within the boundary of the mattress, so it is rarely used.
