In a conversation with my German brother-in-law, it appears that the Westerners are very open to letting their kids climb trees and romp around shoeless. I find it very hard to do, although my husband's always complaining that I'm too protective and that Sara needs to get a bump or two (or three!) to learn how to not bump herself. I guess he's right, but it's sure hard to "let go"!
