Think could be becos the passport is not stamped at Tanjong Pagar so they are trying to check the train ticket to make sure that you did not enter the country illegally. They wont stamp your passport should you go by train. Its strange bcos these people actually went up the train to check our passports personally and surely it wouldnt hurt just to move their fingers a little bit to stamp the passports!
