He's obviously over sensitive and probably has no kids of his own. If it's bothering him so much, he should move not you!!

I think some people are just plain fussy! They buy 1 unit and they think they own the whole block. And from what you've described, the construction of these china buildings seems quite weak. Good idea to consider a ground floor unit then.

Our flooring is made of laminated wood, and with this kind of flooring, when you do a little trot or worse, run, it made a "tok tok tok tok" sound :(

I am quite sure the culprit is the flooring (and perhaps the ultra thin ceiling too), because when I let the kids jump in the kitchen which has stone flooring, there wasn't much noise and of course no complaints.

But really, I think the downstairs are hyper sensitive! I can heard footsteps from my neighbour upstairs too if I listen carefully. However, I didn't notice the sound unless I make it a point to track the sound.

Huileng! Maybe I should blog about it too! Exactly!
So this must be a problem China-wide!

Over here at our estate, this happens too. I have a ground-floor unit (not becos I knew about this problem beforehand but bcos i am lazy to take stairs with kids and my estate has no lifts) so it's ok for me. But yes, every floor seems to be divided only by a wooden plank.

My neighbors (foreigners) all have more than 1 child, so they get complaints ALL the time from the neighbours below too.

My Malaysian neighbour lives on the 2nd floor. She can even hear the dogs in the apt above her pitter patter around. The dogs are not even big dogs! Can you imagine that?

I am very puzzled too but it seems very prevalent.

Only foreigners get complained too, you know why? Because we have more than 1 kid and everyone knows if you only have 1 kid, then obviously there won't be fighting or racing around in the house, so the noise level is much lower.

Hopefully your neighbour realises that soon. Just hope you get a good solution soon!

Huh?? what is the flooring made of?? not those one thin piece of wood that acted as his ceiling and your flooring right?? i think your neighbour might be one of those mentally strung-up individuals to be so sensitive to sounds.
